Escalator Safety Switch
Overview
An escalator safety switch is any of the monitoring devices wired into the safety circuit that stop the machine when a fault appears — a trapped object at the skirt, a missing or dropped step, a broken drive chain, an overspeed or a reversal. One Elevator supplies replacement safety switches, contacts and mounting brackets for the complete escalator safety chain.
Applications
Safety switches are fitted on every escalator and moving walk in metro stations, airports, shopping malls, hospitals and hotels, on OTIS, KONE, Schindler, Mitsubishi, ThyssenKrupp and Hyundai equipment. They are the most common reason an escalator stops with no obvious mechanical fault, and the most common cause of repeat callouts, because a switch that has drifted, corroded or lost its actuator will trip again within days. Most maintenance teams keep the common body styles in stock, since a single failed switch takes the whole unit out of service until the replacement lands.

Selection Guide
Confirm three things before ordering: the switch body type (roller lever, plunger or magnetic), the contact configuration (normally open or normally closed), and the actuating distance. Check the protection class as well — an outdoor or wet pit installation needs an IP65 or better housing, not the IP54 body used indoors. After fitting, set the trip point to the manufacturer’s dimension and confirm the mechanism moves freely, because most failed switches are really a seized actuator. Every switch is tested for contact resistance, trip point and mechanical life.
