Governor Rope

Overview

The governor rope is the thin steel rope that runs over the overspeed governor sheave and drives the safety gear when the car exceeds its rated speed. It is a safety component, so it is replaced on condition rather than on cost. One Elevator supplies replacement governor ropes, tension sheaves and the rope grips that connect to the safety linkage.

Applications

They are fitted on traction elevators in residential blocks, office towers, hotels and hospitals, and suit OTIS, KONE, Schindler, Mitsubishi, ThyssenKrupp and Fujitec governors. A governor rope is replaced whenever the governor is overhauled, and on the same discard criteria as the hoist ropes. It must be kept at the correct tension, because a slack rope delays the point at which the safety gear grips. Because the governor rope is a safety component, we recommend replacing the tension sheave at the same time and recording the date.

Types and Range

  • Galvanised governor ropes in 6 mm, 8 mm and 9.5 mm diameters
  • 6×19 and 8×19 constructions with fibre or steel core
  • Ropes supplied cut to length with swaged fittings
  • Governor tension sheaves and weighted tension frames
  • Rope grips, clips and thimbles
  • Pull-through ropes and safety linkage rods

Each rope is measured against the rise and tagged for the installation team.

Selection Guide

Check three things before ordering: rope diameter and construction, the required length, and the governor sheave groove size. Confirm the tension weight as well, since a slack governor rope delays safety gear operation. The governor and the safety gear should be tested together after any rope work, and we can supply the test procedure with the rope. Ropes are supplied to EN 12385 with test certificates for breaking load and diameter tolerance.

Ordering and Lead Time

Most sizes ship within 7-10 days. Send the governor model and rope diameter and we will confirm compatibility and quote within one business day.

Frequently asked questions

How do I order a governor rope?
Give us the governor model and the rope diameter. The rope grip type and the length also need confirming, since tensioning differs by model.
Should the governor rope be changed with the hoist ropes?
Not necessarily. The governor rope wears on its own cycle and is judged separately, usually on diameter and broken wires.
Do you supply the rope grip?
Yes, along with the tension weight hardware. Tell us the governor model so the grip matches the jaw profile.
