Escalator Handrail

Overview

Escalator handrails are the moving rubber or polyurethane belts that passengers grip while riding an escalator or moving walk. They travel at the same speed as the steps and are the one part of the machine every passenger touches. One Elevator supplies replacement handrails for most installed escalator and autowalk models, cut to length and spliced ready for fitting.

Applications

Our handrails run on commercial escalators in metro stations, airports, shopping malls, hospitals and hotels, and fit equipment from OTIS, KONE, Schindler, Mitsubishi, ThyssenKrupp and Hyundai. Whether you maintain a single unit or a full transit network, we match the handrail to the machine rather than the other way round. Surface glazing, edge cracking and splice failure are the three faults that force a replacement, and all three are easy to spot during a routine walk-through inspection. For sites with more than one escalator, we can colour-match and batch-splice handrails so a replacement looks identical to the units still in service.

Selection Guide

When selecting a replacement, confirm three things: the cross-section profile, the internal width and lip thickness, and the length after splicing. Material also matters — SBR rubber suits indoor traffic, while PU and EPDM blends last longer in direct sun. We recommend inspecting the guide rails and friction wheel at the same time, because a new belt running on worn guides will start to fray within months. Every handrail is produced to EN 115-1 requirements and tested for tensile strength, elongation and wear resistance.

Frequently asked questions

How do I identify the right handrail profile?

Photograph the cross-section of the old belt end and measure the internal width, lip thickness and overall height. Those three dimensions identify the profile.

Can handrails be supplied spliced or endless?

Both. Spliced belts ship as a coil for joining on site; endless belts are vulcanised at the works and need the machine to be stripped.

What is your minimum order?

One length. Handrails are made to order, so there is no minimum, but two or more cuts the freight cost per unit.
