Escalator Drive Belt

Overview

Escalator drive belts transmit power from the motor to the main drive shaft or to the handrail drive, on machines that use a belt rather than a chain. They run quieter than chains, need no lubrication and are cheaper to replace. One Elevator supplies replacement drive belts and toothed timing belts cut to the original width and length.

Applications

They are used in escalators and moving walks from OTIS, KONE, Schindler, Mitsubishi, ThyssenKrupp and Hyundai, in shopping malls, hotels, offices and metro stations. Belts have a fixed service life and are replaced on a schedule rather than on condition, which makes them well suited to planned maintenance. Cracking, rib loss and glazing on the flanks are the signs that a change is overdue. Where a machine uses both a belt and a chain, we recommend checking both, since a fresh belt often masks wear in the chain behind it.

Pulley grooves are inspected before the belt is dispatched, since a worn pulley shortens belt life.

Selection Guide

Check three things when ordering: belt type and tooth pitch, length and width, and the number of ribs or teeth. Also confirm the ambient conditions — a hot machine room or an outdoor unit needs a compound rated for the temperature. Belts that have been stored for years should not be fitted, because rubber compounds harden on the shelf. Belts are tested for tensile cord strength, hardness and dimensional stability.
