Elevator Wire Rope
Overview
Elevator wire ropes are the steel hoist ropes that carry the car and counterweight over the traction sheave. They are the primary load path of the whole installation, so their condition is recorded at every inspection. One Elevator supplies replacement hoist ropes cut and terminated to the rise, in standard constructions for traction and hydraulic elevators.
Applications
They are used in passenger lifts, freight elevators, hospital beds lifts and observation lifts in residential blocks, office towers, hotels and shopping malls, on OTIS, KONE, Schindler, Mitsubishi, ThyssenKrupp and Fujitec machines. Ropes are replaced on a condition basis once broken wires, diameter loss or corrosion reach the discard limits. Rope sets are always changed as a complete set, because a new rope beside a stretched one takes more than its share of the load. We also supply the tensioning service and the discard criteria, so the set is replaced on measured evidence rather than on a fixed date.
Types and Range
- 8x19S, 8x19W and 9×21 filler wire hoist ropes
- Parallel-lay and Seale constructions for traction drives
- Galvanised and ungalvanised ropes, dry or lubricated
- Ropes supplied cut to length with seamless ferrules
- Wedge sockets, rope sockets and thimbles
- Rope tension gauges, lubrication blocks and clamps
Rope ends are capped and tagged so the installation team can identify each run.
Selection Guide
Order by checking three values: nominal diameter, construction and lay, and the required length per rope. Also confirm the sheave groove profile, since a worn groove will damage a new rope within weeks. Rope tension should be equalised after installation and checked again after the first few hundred trips. Ropes are supplied to EN 12385 with certificates for tensile grade, breaking load and elongation.
Ordering and Lead Time
Most sizes ship within 10-15 days. Tell us the machine model, rope diameter and number of ropes, and we will return a quote, usually within 24 hours.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I order hoist ropes?
- Give us the machine model, rope diameter, number of ropes and the length, and confirm whether the ends are pre-formed.
- When do elevator ropes need replacing?
- When broken wires reach the code limit, or the rope diameter has worn past tolerance. All ropes on a machine should be changed as a set.
- Do you supply ropes as a set?
- Yes, cut to length and matched to the machine. Ropes must be replaced together, since a new rope beside worn ones takes more than its share of load.
