Elevator Encoder

Overview

Elevator encoders are the rotary feedback devices mounted on the traction machine, governor or door motor shaft that tell the controller where the car is and how fast it is moving. Without a clean encoder signal a modern drive cannot start smoothly, stop accurately or hold the car at the landing. One Elevator supplies replacement encoders for traction machines and gearless drives, supplied with the matching coupling and mounting hardware.

Applications

They are fitted on geared and gearless machines in residential blocks, office towers, hotels, hospitals and shopping malls, and suit OTIS, KONE, Schindler, Mitsubishi, ThyssenKrupp and Fujitec drives. Encoders are changed after bearing noise, water ingress or cable damage, and they are often the first part a technician suspects when a lift shows jerky starts, repeated re-levelling or an unexplained encoder fault trip.

Resolution and output interface are matched to the drive, not to the machine.

Selection Guide

Confirm three things when ordering: the output interface and voltage, the pulse count or resolution, and the mechanical mounting, including shaft diameter, hollow bore and flange pattern. Check the cable before condemning the encoder, because most encoder faults turn out to be a broken or unshielded cable rather than the device itself. Every encoder is tested for signal integrity, temperature drift and vibration resistance before packing. On gearless machines the encoder is usually changed together with the bearings, because the access is exactly the same job.

How do I identify the right encoder?
Give us the output type, the pulse count, the shaft or hollow-bore size and the connector. Encoders that look alike often differ in output.
Why do encoders fail?
Bearing wear, moisture, and cable damage at the connector. Intermittent faults usually point to the cable or plug, not the encoder body.
Can you match a discontinued encoder?
Often, yes. Send the old model marking and the interface type and we will check the current equivalent before you order.
