Deflector Sheave

Overview

Deflector sheaves, sometimes called diverting or secondary pulleys, redirect the hoist ropes between the traction sheave and the car or counterweight to get the rope spacing the machine requires. They change rope direction rather than traction, but their groove condition drives rope life. One Elevator supplies replacement deflector sheaves, complete pulley assemblies and the bearings and shafts that carry them.

Applications

They are used in machine-room and machine-room-less traction elevators in residential blocks, office towers, hotels, hospitals and shopping malls, and are made to fit OTIS, KONE, Schindler, Mitsubishi, ThyssenKrupp and Fujitec machines. A worn sheave groove shows up as rope vibration, noise and premature rope wear, so sheaves are usually regrooved or replaced with the ropes. Uneven groove depths across the set are the clearest sign of trouble. Where access to the sheave is difficult, we can supply the assembly pre-mounted on its shaft to cut the installation time on site.

Groove profile is cut to the rope diameter, not copied from a worn sample.

Selection Guide

Order by confirming three things: the sheave diameter and groove pitch, the rope diameter and number of ropes, and the bore and bearing size. Inspect the groove depth at the same time — a new rope sitting in a worn groove will not bed correctly. Where groove wear is still within limits, regrooving on site is often cheaper than a new sheave. Sheaves are balanced and inspected for groove profile, run-out and hardness before dispatch.
