Elevator Limit Switch

Overview

Elevator limit switches are the mechanical and proximity switches in the shaft and machine room that define the travel limits and stop the car before it reaches the physical end of travel. They are the final electrical stop, so their reliability matters more than their cost. One Elevator supplies replacement limit switches, final limit switches and the actuating cams that trigger them.

Applications

They are fitted in passenger lifts, freight elevators, hospital beds lifts and service lifts in residential blocks, office towers, hotels, hospitals and industrial sites, and suit OTIS, KONE, Schindler, Mitsubishi, ThyssenKrupp and Fujitec machines. Limit switches are replaced after water ingress, mechanical damage or contact failure, and are checked at every statutory inspection. Pit flooding is the single most common cause of limit switch failure. Because switches are cheap and access is expensive, most sites replace all the shaft switches during one visit rather than one at a time.

Selection Guide

Choose by confirming three things: the switch type and contact configuration, the actuating method (cam, plunger or magnet), and the mounting pattern. Check the operating force and overtravel as well, since a switch mounted too close to its stop will be destroyed on the first overrun. After fitting, the switch must be functionally tested by running the car onto it under inspection control. All switches are tested for contact resistance, insulation and mechanical life.
