Escalator Step Chain

Overview

Escalator step chains are the paired roller chains that pull the steps around the track and hold them at an even pitch through the incline. They carry the full passenger load, so elongation and pin wear build up steadily over the service life. One Elevator supplies replacement step chains in matched left and right pairs, delivered pre-lubricated with the connecting links and tensioner hardware ready to fit.

Applications

They are used on escalators and moving walks in transit hubs, airports, shopping centres and department stores, and are built to fit OTIS, KONE, Schindler, Mitsubishi, ThyssenKrupp, Hyundai and SJEC equipment. Transit-grade chains are also available for 24-hour stations where shutdown windows are short. Most operators replace chains on elongation rather than on age, and we can supply the gauge and the discard limits with the chain. Where the escalator cannot be stopped for long, we can pre-assemble the chain and lubricator parts so the crew only has to swap the run.

Types and Range

The range covers the configurations most often requested:

Chain length is calculated from your step count and pitch, then verified against a sample or the machine serial plate.

Selection Guide

Choose a replacement by checking three values first: pitch, number of links, and roller type (inboard or outboard). Also confirm the lubrication method — oil-bath chains need a working automatic lubricator, while sealed chains run dry. Chains are always replaced in pairs, since a new chain beside a stretched one loads the step band unevenly. All chains are produced under ISO 9001 quality control and batch-tested for tensile strength, pin hardness and elongation.

Frequently asked questions

How do I confirm the correct step chain?

Send the pitch, roller diameter and link count. If the old chain is worn past measuring, the escalator model plus a photo of a chain link is usually enough.

When should a step chain be replaced?

When elongation passes 3% of the original pitch, or when rollers are flat-spotted. A chain run past that point damages the sprockets as well.

Do you supply the chain with connecting links?

Yes, every chain ships with a connecting link, and we can include the matching sprockets as a kit so both wear in together.
