Elevator Light Curtain

Overview

Elevator light curtains are the infrared safety screens on the car door that detect passengers and objects in the doorway and reverse the doors before they touch. They remove the need for physical contact, which is why they have largely replaced mechanical safety edges. One Elevator supplies replacement light curtains, photocells and the mounting profiles for most elevator door systems.

Applications

They are used in passenger lifts, hospital beds lifts and service lifts in residential blocks, office towers, hotels, hospitals and shopping malls, and are made to fit OTIS, KONE, Schindler, Mitsubishi, ThyssenKrupp and Fujitec doors. Light curtains have replaced mechanical safety edges on most modern lifts, and are now a standard retrofit. Dark clothing, strong sunlight and dirty lenses are the three things that cause nuisance reversals. Most nuisance reversals come from dirty lenses or a loose profile, so we include a cleaning and alignment check with every supply.

Beam spacing and response time are selected to suit the door closing speed.

Selection Guide

Choose by confirming three things: the detection height and number of beams, the output type (relay, transistor or bus), and the door opening width. Check the door closing force after fitting — the curtain must stop the doors well before the force limit is reached. On a retrofit, the profile can usually be mounted over the existing door edge without modifying the panel. Curtains are produced to EN 81-20 requirements and tested for beam integrity and response time.
