Elevator Brake Lining

Overview

Elevator brake linings are the friction pads on the machine brake that hold the car stationary at the landing and stop it in an emergency. They are a scheduled wear item, and they are the difference between a lift that holds and one that creeps. One Elevator supplies replacement linings, complete brake pad assemblies and the rivet and bonding kits used across most traction machines.

Applications

They are fitted on geared and gearless machines in residential blocks, office towers, hotels, hospitals and shopping malls, and suit OTIS, KONE, Schindler, Mitsubishi, ThyssenKrupp and Fujitec equipment. Linings are replaced once the friction material reaches its minimum thickness, because below that the brake loses holding torque. Brake dust in the machine room is the usual first sign that the linings are wearing quickly. Because linings are changed as a set, we recommend ordering both brake arms together even when only one side has reached its limit.

Selection Guide

Choose by checking three things: the drum or disc diameter, the lining width and thickness, and the fixing method (riveted or bonded). Inspect the drum surface at the same time — glazed or scored drums will shorten the life of a new lining. After fitting, the air gap and the braking torque are both reset and recorded on the maintenance log. Every lining is tested for friction coefficient, density, hardness and shear strength.

Usually. Send the machine model, the drum diameter and the old lining’s thickness and width, and we will match it against current and discontinued patterns.

How do I know the brake needs attention?

When the car rolls on stopping, or the lining is past its wear limit. Both lining wear and coil faults show up as poor stopping.

Do you supply a complete brake assembly?

Yes, where the housing or the arms are worn. Most customers buy the lining kit first, since that is what normally wears.
